Brainbox Chat
I started to develop this tool a few years ago now. I was seeing lots of young people and adults with anxiety & anger related issues both in my NHS job & private work. I too had experienced anxiety that resulted in irrational thinking & behaviours. It was as if my thinking brain switched off and I appeared to have an impulsive response. Learning about Paul MacLean’s ‘Triune Brain Theory’ helped me to make understand these behaviours . With the help of my husband I was able to demonstrate this theory by using the analogy of the computer. By thinking of the brain as a most complex computer with different components representing different parts of the brain I could show others what was happening inside the brain at times of high emotional arousal, BINGO it really did seem to make sense to so many people and once you can understand impulsive behaviours & actions you can start to take control. It takes away the blame but not the responsibility for controlling your responses. I have used it in schools to talk about stress & anxiety before exams, with groups discussing anger management & with individuals of all ages from 6 to 60!
